The Bodysurfers by Robert Drewe

9780141008011 This classic Australian book is a collection of short stories by one of this country’s favourite writers, Robert Drewe. First published in 1983, Drewe’s portrayal of our obsession with the coast is still as relevant today as it was back then. You can literally feel the sand between your toes and the sun on your back as you follow each character’s story: be it recovering from a breakdown; seeking the truth; searching for happiness or living with infidelity.

Although a collection, the book links three generations of the Lang family, and each story is a gem that can be read and enjoyed in isolation. The Bodysurfers has made its way to film, television, radio and theatre. It is a wonderful book and highly recommended for anyone who loves the sea and like me, has somehow had their head buried in the sand, and missed this classic.
