I’m one of those bibliophiles who have to purchase a book without the movie cover. The alternative seems tacky. Not sure why I feel this way as over the years I have enjoyed many of the movies that have stemmed from books—Pride and Prejudice, The Great Gatsby, Life of Pi, and so on… There have also been some complete doozies. Jane Eyre springs to mind.
I read the Light Between Oceans back at in December 2012. “…this is a story of right and wrong, and how sometimes they look the same.” I really enjoyed this heartbreaking tale set in 1926 on an island off the coast of the south-west of Western Australia—a region I grew up in.
After years of trying to fall pregnant, two miscarriages and one stillbirth, what would you do if a boat washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby? This book was a great discussion novel for our book club and highly recommended!
The movie is set to come out later this year. I was a bit disappointed to read that the main actors are not Australians—Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander hail from Ireland and Europe—but take solace in the fact Bryan Brown and Jack Thompson will make appearances. The movie has been filmed in New Zealand and parts of Tasmania and I am looking forward to seeing how the story translates onto the big screen.
